can you connect a laptop to a desk computer without the router being on?
we just got th laptop and were trying to connect it to my desk computer

Yes you can. You can accomplish this via Wireless or through the use of a cross over ethernet cable.
Make sure what ever method you use, change your Nic and/or wireless adapter settings from DHCP to a static IP Address.

It depends on what you want to do. If you want to connect two computers in order to transfer files, then yes you can do that. You would need to connect one computer to another with an Ethernet cable. If you want to connect one computer to another to get the internet, no you can not do that.
